San Francisco Ballot Pamphlet 2008:
Argument in Support of Proposition
K
Save
women’s lives, stop enforcement of damaging prostitution laws.
Most sex
workers are mothers and/or young people working to support ourselves
and our families. Criminalization pushes women underground into more
isolated areas away from the protection of the community. Putting
women in jail for what is essentially consenting sex between adults
destroys lives. The money currently spent on prosecuting sex workers
should go into supporting women and children and prosecuting rapists
and murderers. New Zealand successfully decriminalized prostitution
five years ago and found:
• No
rise in numbers of women working
• Women
able to report violence without fear of arrest.
Let San Francisco
be next! Save women’s lives, stop enforcement of damaging prostitution
laws.
